Blog Terms Explained
Here is a list that I have made of all the basic blog terms which should help the novice blogger have a better understanding of some of the blog terms used…
Atom
The Atom Syndication Format is used for web feeds and is written in XML which allows a user to download updates made to the website or blog using a feed reader such as Netvibes or Bloglines
Blog Carnival
A Blog Carnival is a type of online magazine which is dedicated to one particular topic. It's usually published on a regular schedule, often weekly or monthly and contains links to other articles related to the topic
Blog Categories
Blog categories are a way to organizing your blog entries. When a user selects a particular category a list of all blog entries under that category will appear
Blog Client
A bog client is the software used to manage a blog allowing you to add and edit content from any computer
Blog Post
A blog post is a single written entry into a blog
Blogger
A blogger is somebody who maintains a blog or weblog
Blogosphere
The term blogosphere is used as a collective term for the entire blogging community
Blogroll
A blogroll is a collection of links to other weblogs that the author reads and recommends. This list is usually placed on the sidebar of the blog
Comment Spam
Also known as blog spam is done by automatically posting random comments to blogs which promote commercial services. Most blog software has spam plug ins that will help control comment spam
Link Love
Link love is the posting of links to other sites or blogs that the blog owner feels would be of interest to their readers
Permalink
A permalink is a URL that points to a specific blog post
Ping
A ping is an alert which is sent out by the blogging software such as wordpress when a new post has been placed
Reciprocal Link
A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two websites
RSS Aggregator
An aggregator is a client software that uses web feeds (rss feeds) to retrieve syndicated content from blogs which then allows readers to be notified whenever their favorite blogs have been updated with new content
RSS Feed
An RSS feed is a web feed format used to publish frequently updated web content such as blogs and news feeds
Tag
A tag is usually a list of keywords used in association with the content on a website or blog post
Trackback
A trackback is a way for one blog to notify another blog that it has placed a link to one of their entries. Usually an excerpt with a link to the linking blog usually appears on the referenced blog in the comment section of the particular post
Weblog
A weblog is simply another name for a blog
Wordpress
Wordpress is a excellent open-source and free blogging software that I highly recommend and which can be found here wordpress
